Linkword Stories:

Sun City’s resident superhero Heroman had once again caught his arch nemesis Fiendish in the middle of attempting to pull off a dastardly plot.

“Unhand that detonator, Fiendish!” cried Heroman.

“Not on your life!” declared the fiend, hitting the button.

Heroman moved faster than the speed of light and managed to get to the bombs before they blew up. He threw the bombs up into the sky where they exploded safely. Then Heroman returned to face the fiend.

“Now back to the asylum for you!” Heroman said.

“You know I’ll be back, Heroman! I will stop at nothing to defeat you and rule this city!”

A few months later Fiendish kidnapped Heroman’s girlfriend, Mary Rogers. As she dangled off the edge of the building, the fiend told her his plan.

“You are the bait he can’t refuse. And when Heroman shows up I’ll end him once and for all.”

Sure enough, Heroman showed up and Fiendish blasted him with a special ray gun. As Heroman laid there suffering Fiendish cut the rope holding Mary up. As she screamed and fell Heroman suddenly drew upon a hidden reserve of strength in order to save his girlfriend.

When they touched down on the ground Mary looked at him seriously.

“You need to end that fiend! Finish him off!” she said.

“I can’t do that. If I did that I would be no different than the fiend I fight.” he replied.

He collected Fiendish and put him behind bars once again.

A few months later Fiendish poisoned the water supply and only he had the antidote.

“I’ll give you the antidote in exchange for the keys to the city and complete control over the local government and police force."

“You fiend! We can’t give in to terrorist threats!” declared Heroman.

“It’s not a threat, it’s a fact.” said the fiend.

Fortunately another antidote was created by Heroman’s super computer. As the computer printed out the formula a message flashed across the screen.

HEROMAN - PUT AN END TO THIS FIEND IMMEDIATELY. IT IS THE ONLY LOGICAL SOLUTION.

Heroman scoffed. “You are a computer. You lack my sense of morals and justice. I cannot put an end to the fiend. That would make me as bad as the very fiend I fight.”

Years passed in this manner until Fiendish decided it was time to retire. Without a fiend to thwart Heroman was at a loss for what to do with himself.

“Without a fiend to fight, this is the end!”

Heroman flew off to his lair, never to be seen again. As soon as Fiendish was sure Heroman’s career had reached it’s end the fiend came out of retirement to rule the city. Everyone had been right, Heroman should have ended that fiend while he had the chance!
