Linkword Stories:

Emerson Enterprises was a well respected company in the local community; their founder Roger Emerson had taken it from a tiny 3 person operation and built it up into the massive success it was. A large percentage of the local population was employed by Emerson Enterprises and they were a huge part of the community.

However, problems arose when Roger started getting up in years. Being the smart man he was, Roger had things set in place to keep others from taking the company from him. It was legally sound and tight as a drum but unfortunately this included his son, Eric.

There was nothing Eric could do when he saw his father leading his dog Spike into the boardroom.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I want this dog put on the payroll! This boy has got some great ideas to keep this company running!”

Eric groaned and wanted to seep down into the cracks on the floor. A dog on the payroll? How humiliating! Word of the dog on payroll at the local company spread like wildfire; Eric heard people giggling wherever he went.

The final straw for Eric was when he went to sign a contract and the dog started growling at him.

“Can’t do that business deal, son.” said Roger.

“You’ve got to be kidding me! He’s a freaking dog!” yelled Eric.

“Yes but he’s on the payroll, son. Spike’s a good boy and he knows he needs to earn his keep.” replied Roger who was stroking the dog’s side.

A month later the company Eric had been trying to do business with tanked and he was forced to admit that the dog on payroll had actually done him a favor. Eric eventually made peace with having a dog on payroll but that didn’t make it any less awkward when he handed the dog a check. It felt completely unnatural!
